Canggu and Ubud are way overcooked. Stay far away from there if possible. The Bukit is a little better but land prices are absurd in the area unless you want to live in the slums of Kutuh (central Bukit). Unless you have an ocean view, the Bukit is not really desirable. It gets very dry in the dry season and becomes a desert wasteland. And when tourism season kicks back in, you're dealing with crazy traffic on all the main roads as the hoards of Chinese buses and Russian Instagram models flock to the beaches for sunset.
Generally speaking, I would highly advise against buying any land in south Bali. Better off buying a house for cheap and then renovating it to your western standards. That is far more affordable and if you're the environment type, you can sleep easy knowing you're not another Bule-douche tearing down a rice field for their dream Bali villa you only use a few months out of the year.
Thank you for the insight, it is much appreciated! I will take note of this. Are there any locations which you might recommend?
Now that you mention it, every time I have been in the Bukit area, the traffic is horrendous lol.
Looking at Rumah123, it looks like we can make this happen within our budget of $180k usd. Alternatively, if we could buy some decent land for cheap, we could hold it and then build a couple years down the road.
Unfortunately, we are living and working in Bangkok at the moment and will likely make another international move in 2022 (international teachers).
